I have always looked to my Slavic ancestors, wondering about the art forms they inhabited, looking to the relics which have survived time, which are textiles and forms of embroidery. Embroidery was an art form which I had always looked longingly towards. I just began, let instinct lead me in this journey and soon I was actually beginning applique. I just tried to work one moment at a time, and it quickly became apparent to me that using threads like this was such an intimate and simple way of making which I hadn’t experienced since my grandfather first taught me to sew as a child. In the experience of learning this art, I found myself studying shapes with which to create my own embroidery motifs. I found that the forms I was most attracted to were children’s book illustrations, they felt like home to me. I also looked to the meanings of original Slavic and Croatian embroidery, and took much inspiration from my frequent excursions to the local estuaries.
